Stainless Steel

Electropolishing and Passivation Services

Expert Electropolishing provides controlled surface-finishing services for 300-series stainless steel components and selected corrosion-resistant alloys.

From high-volume runs of small parts to large fabricated assemblies, we help manufacturers improve surface condition, cleanability, appearance and corrosion resistance.

Our primary services include electropolishing, nitric passivation and citric passivation. Each project begins with a review of the material, part geometry, specifications and desired result.

Electropolishing

Improve the Surface of Stainless Steel

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process that removes a microscopic, controlled layer from the surface of stainless steel.

The process reduces microscopic high points and surface imperfections. Depending on the original condition of the part, electropolishing can create a smoother, brighter and more uniform surface.

It can also help reduce small burrs, remove embedded contaminants, improve cleanability and support the natural corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Electropolishing Removes—It Does Not Coat

Electropolishing is often confused with electroplating.

Electroplating deposits another material onto the surface. Electropolishing removes a controlled amount of the existing stainless steel surface.

Nothing is added to the component.

Passivation

Support the Natural Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel

Passivation is a chemical treatment used to remove free iron and other surface contaminants from stainless steel.

Removing these contaminants helps the material form and maintain its protective chromium-rich oxide layer.

Unlike electropolishing, passivation does not intentionally remove enough material to smooth, deburr or brighten the surface. It is used when the primary goal is surface cleanliness and corrosion protection rather than a visible change in finish.

Expert Electropolishing offers both nitric and citric passivation. The correct method depends on the stainless steel grade, customer requirements and applicable specification.

Nitric Passivation

A Proven Passivation Process for Stainless Steel

Nitric passivation uses a nitric-acid solution to remove free iron and contaminants from the surface of stainless steel.

It is a recognized treatment for many stainless steel grades and regulated manufacturing applications. The proper solution, concentration, temperature and processing time depend on the alloy and specification.

Citric Passivation

A Citric-Acid Alternative for Stainless Steel

Citric passivation uses a citric-acid solution to remove free iron from the stainless steel surface and support formation of the material’s passive layer.

It can provide an effective alternative to nitric passivation for compatible stainless steel grades and applications.
